Red Panda Cubs make journey to Germany

7th May 2015

Two Red Panda cubs born at Paradise Park in Hayle last June have just been moved from Paradise Park in Hayle over to Magdeburg Zoo in Germany.

Curator David Woolcock explains “When the cubs reach about a year old, it is the right time for them leave their parents. The studbook keeper who manages the movements of this species, which is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ in the wild, chose Magdeburg Zoo to receive the young Red Pandas. All four of the Red Panda family were weighed regularly, having been trained to stand on the scales for a fruit treat. The good news is that both the cubs reached just over 4kg each, their dad Lang Za is also 4kg but their mother Jai-Li is currently 6kg. Her weight increase may well mean that more cubs will be on the way in June!

The training was helpful during their last health check and to get them into their specially built travelling boxes without any stress ready for their journey to Germany, which all went very smoothly
