One of the main jobs for our Keepers is creating fun, interesting, interactive enrichment activities which are key in encouraging a range of normal behaviours that birds and mammals find rewarding, providing them with mental stimulation, social interaction and exercise.

Great Blue Touraco

This is the largest of the touracos, and quite common in much of its forested African home.

These magnificent birds become very bold (in areas where they are not hunted), and tolerate people under the trees they are using.

They spend a lot of time feeding, with a lull in activity during the hottest part of the day when they have a siesta. They visit the same fruiting tree every day until the food supply is exhausted. When they have finished feeding, and are sitting in vegetation they are said to ‘emit irregular low grunts’ – but we have not noticed them so far!

Our pair have produced many eggs, but only one chick has been successfully reared to fledging age so far.
