In Britain Red Squirrels only survive in isolated pockets, but conservation schemes are helping them to recover. Some of our young have been included in a scheme on Anglesey, along with planting large areas of trees, including Scots pine, larch and spruce as they provide the best year-round food.
The reason they became rare was the introduction in 1876 of the dominant Grey Squirrel, and the viral disease they carry, also woodland disturbance. There are populations on islands including the Isle of Wight, Brownsea Island and Jersey which Grey Squirrels haven’t been able to reach.
The latest squirrel map shows the status of UK reds and greys.

Red squirrels live in dreys (nests) they make in trees from interwoven twigs that they line with soft moss, leaves and grass. In October, red squirrels are foraging for nuts and seeds to store for winter. If you help by supplementary feeding, please provide a diverse range of foods – not just peanuts. Here is one of our red squirrels enjoying Hawthorn berries.
