Café Assistant with cooking skills

Main purpose of job

We need someone to join our small team in the Otter Pool Café and JungleBarn Snack Bar at Paradise Park. We are looking for a reliable and enthusiastic person with experience of working in a catering environment to prepare food and serve customers in a friendly and professional manner.

We will give training on our procedures for cooking, preparing sandwiches and salads etc. and the food hygiene procedures to follow.

Serving on the counter involves taking orders, making hot drinks, operating a till, handling cash and cards, plus clearing tables and cleaning in the kitchen. Also cashing up at the end of day. All these tasks will involve liaising with the Café Supervisor and other staff to ensure the smooth day to day running of the cafes.

Key responsibilities

  1. To give a warm welcome to all visitors
  2. Cooking and serving in the cafes
  3. Responsibility for handling money and processing cards
  4. Keep the cafe clean and stocked
  5. Follow end of day procedures

Specialist skills/training/knowledge

  1. Clear communication with customers, suppliers and other staff
  2. Catering knowledge
  3. Ability and willingness to work weekends
  4. Clean, tidy and appropriate clothing


Three days a week until October.

JungleBarn Assistant – Part-time

You will be part of a small team at JungleBarn indoor play centre at Paradise Park, reporting to the JungleBarn Supervisor.

The job includes being welcoming to visitors coming to play and attending birthday parties, making sure that everyone plays safely, and helping in the café. You will keep the play area and café clean and tidy, and in quieter times follow directions from the senior person in charge and rotas to do cleaning and maintenance. For parties you will prepare rooms, serve food and clear up afterwards.

It is important that you work with the Supervisor and senior members of staff to make sure that the equipment is clean and safe. Be aware of the immediate priorities required (ie watching equipment, clearing tables or regular cleaning) while always being friendly and polite to visitors and colleagues.

We are looking for:

Responsible and friendly attitude

Good level of physical fitness

Good communication skills with visitors and staff

Suitable DBS check if required

First Aid qualification preferred

Reasonable computer skills

Several days cover are required this season including weekend days. Between 4.5 hours to 8 hours in a day you will work flexibly with other staff to cover the opening hours which are 10am to 6pm, with occasional evenings until 9pm.

Holidays are 28 days a year (pro-rata) and, because of the nature of our business bank holidays are treated as normal days although the JungleBarn is closed on Christmas day.

Paradise Park is a wildlife sanctuary which specialises in rare birds, especially parrots. It is also home to otters, red pandas and farm animals, has exotic gardens and undertakes a lot of conservation projects. The JungleBarn indoor play centre opened in 2005. As hoped, it has established Paradise Park as a good place for families to visit at any time of year and whatever the weather. The JungleBarn has four wildlife-themed party rooms, and we pride ourselves on our excellent facilities for birthday parties which are now an important part of our business.


From penguin feeding to the fantastic JungleBarn indoor play centre to exotic summer gardens, there is plenty to keep you entertained on your visit to Paradise Park.
