Remembering Jai-Li, our beautiful Red Panda

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our much-loved Red Panda, Jai-Li, has passed away.

Jai-Li was a very special member of the Paradise Park family and had been part of our lives for more than 14 years, arriving from Copenhagen Zoo in 2012 as a one-year-old.

Her name means “strong and beautiful” – and she certainly lived up to it.

During her time at Paradise Park, Jai-Li became an important part of the international Red Panda breeding programme. She was a wonderful mother to seven cubs: twins born in 2013, 2014 and 2015, followed by her final cub, Koda. Her legacy has continued to grow, with her offspring contributing to the breeding programme at other collections and going on to produce cubs of their own.

Beyond her contribution to the breeding programme, Jai-Li was a much-loved character here at Paradise Park. She was adored by our keepers, staff and the many visitors who came to see her over the years.

Earlier this year we were delighted to celebrate her 15th birthday, a very special milestone for a very special panda. It seems only yesterday that we were sharing photographs of her enjoying her birthday cake, surrounded by the keepers who cared for her so dearly.

Jai-Li leaves behind a wonderful legacy – not only through her offspring and their descendants, but through the many people who fell in love with Red Pandas because of her.

Her life has also been part of our continuing commitment to protecting Red Pandas in the wild. Through our Red Panda Experiences, Jai-Li helped us raise awareness of this endangered species and support conservation work protecting their forests and future, sending more than £20,000 in donations to the Red Panda Network charity for tree planting and habitat restoration in Nepal.

We will miss her enormously, but we will always be grateful for the years we shared with her. Her legacy will live on through the generations.

Sleep well, Jai-Li. You will always be part of the Paradise Park family. ❤️
