Derek was Paradise Park’s first ever Caribbean flamingo chick. Back in the summer of 2019 Derek’s parents stopped incubating about a week too early. So, Keepers decided to put the egg in an incubator not knowing if it would hatch, but within days the egg started chirping and the chick hatched successfully on 19 August. Derek was originally named when she was a tiny chick just a couple of days old by Keeper Becky who hand-reared her. A while later, Becky got confirmation that Derek was in fact female, but by then staff and visitors we were already used to calling her ‘Derek’ so the name stuck!

In 2023 Derek partnered with a male flamingo who was subsequently named Doris by visitors last summer. Below.
Paradise Park has nine Caribbean flamingos, and they are one of the highlights of a visit and can been seen in their open enclosure within the Walled Garden.
