One of the main jobs for our Keepers is creating fun, interesting, interactive enrichment activities which are key in encouraging a range of normal behaviours that birds and mammals find rewarding, providing them with mental stimulation, social interaction and exercise.

Frank the Eagle Owl is back home

Frank the European Eagle Owl is well-known as one of the stars of the afternoon flying show at Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary.

Prior to the beginning of the summer flying shows, the show staff put in a tremendous amount of work, using positive reinforcement training with the birds, so they are ready for Easter and the start of the free flying shows. On Wednesday 26th March Keepers Sarah-Jayne and Matt flew Frank out on the picnic lawn for the first time of the season. As soon as he left his aviary seagulls mobbed him and caused him fly into car park where he stayed for the rest of the day. Luckily, staff fly Frank was a GPS transmitter which lets us know where he is if we lose sight of him. Keepers tried numerous times through the day to call him down, but he was very happy watching our visitors come and go in the car park. He started moving around at dusk but was having too much fun to come down to Keepers Archie and Emma. The next morning Keeper Becky and Sarah-Jayne found him at the Park sitting in the trees just relaxing still not ready to come down. Thursday night he was active again and Sarah-Jayne and Emma tried to locate him using the GPS, but it was so dark and the trees thick they could not see or hear him. He was later spotted after 10pm by the lovely public near Hayle Tennis Courts and this was the last ping on the GPS location as the battery went into power saving mode and shut down. On Friday morning Keeper Danny and Sarah-Jayne were out very early to locate him, but all was quiet. After a post was put on social media and we got reports of sightings it seemed he had a very busy night and was most likely needing to rest. Friday evening Keepers Elinor and Matt took a drive to Hayle to see if they could hear him as it was getting dark, and thankfully luck struck. Matt called Sarah-Jayne who came straight away. Frank tried to land on Matt twice but just could not quite do it and he flew back on to school grounds. Elinor kept an eye on him which was very difficult in the dark whilst Matt and Sarah-Jayne tried to find good places to get him down. The Keepers could tell he wanted to but was a bit nervous of his surroundings. For the 2nd time Frank few to the front of the school, so Sarah-Jayne drove around to the front and Matt and Elinor stayed at the back. Sarah-Jayne called, or should we say 'hooted' towards him and he responded but still sounded further away. So she 'hooted' again and this time he was much closer. It was very dark, and the Sarah-Jayne couldn't see him. She started talking to him with her gloved hand held out. Then out of the dark he flew straight to her but landed on the fencing and he tried again but was nervous. Although you could see he wanted to come back he was flighty so when he was on the fence for the second time Sarah-Jayne got hold of his Jesse’s and bought him to the glove. The Keepers then had little victory cheer and dance (sorry Hayle) and Keeper Archie drove them all back to Paradise Park. Before going back into his aviary Frank was given a full health check to make sure he was not in need of medical treatment from his little 'holiday' and his GPS was removed. Once he had the all clear he was released into his aviary with his favourite meal. 'Artiemis' the great grey owl in the next aviary was very happy to see him back too. The staff would like to express their sincere thanks to the local community who came to Franks aid and reported sightings on social media, which the Keepers were able to follow up quickly and made all the difference in ensuring Frank came home safely. THANK YOU! xx

Prior to the start of the summer events, the show staff put in a tremendous amount of work with the birds, using positive reinforcement training so they are ready for their daily flights at Easter.

On 26th March Head of Shows Sarah-Jayne and Presenter Matt took Frank out to the picnic lawn for one of his first training flights. Unfortunately some seagulls noticed, swooped towards him and he flew towards the car park and sat in a tall tree for the rest of the day. Keepers kept watch on him and tried to call him down but he was very happy watching visitors come and go from his perch. At dusk he moved around a bit but still wouldn’t come down to Archie or Emma, the next Keepers on watch.

Frank the Eagle Owl in a tree at the Park

Head of Shows Sarah-Jayne explains “Like most of the birds in shows, Frank has a tiny GPS transmitter attached to a tail feather so he can be tracked if he is out of sight. On Thursday Becky (‘Head of Softbills’ at Paradise Park) and I  tracked him sitting in the trees at the Park just relaxing still not ready to come down. In the evening, he was active again, and staff tried to locate him using the GPS but now the signal was not so clear and we couldn’t see him. That night though Frank was spotted near Hayle Tennis Courts – this was the last ping on the GPS location as the battery went into power saving mode then shut down. Our post on social media led to lots of sightings from the local community which was invaluable and it seemed he had a very busy night hooting around Hayle, early next morning there was no sign as he was most likely needing to rest.

Frank had been out two nights but we knew he was doing fine, it was just a question of when he would be ready to come down perhaps tempted by an easy meal. So, Friday evening Keepers Elinor and Matt were driving around Hayle searching as it was getting dark and thankfully struck lucky at Hayle Academy.

Matt alerted me and I was on my way, meanwhile Frank tried to land on Matt but due to the angle could not quite do it and flew back to the school. As we didn’t have access to the school grounds we searched out the best place and eventually I called, or should I say ‘hooted’ and Frank responded. I ‘hooted’ again and Frank came closer. It was very dark, and although I couldn’t see him, I talked to him and held my gloved hand out. Out of the dark he flew straight over to me but was a bit nervous and landed on a fence. I took the opportunity to take hold of the leather jesse’s around his ankles and brought him to the glove. The Keepers had a little victory cheer and dance (sorry Hayle) and Keeper Archie drove us all back to Paradise Park.”
