Oldest Humboldt’s penguin in Europe
Penguin ‘Spneb’ is believed to be the oldest Humboldt’s penguin in Europe! She will be celebrating her 36th Birthday on Tuesday 16th April 2024.
Photographed below with Keeper Lauren
Keeper Lauren comments “It’s lovely to see Spneb at 36 years still out every day with the rest of the 21 colony of Humboldt’s penguins, eager for her fish, and even trying to steal them from the others” 🤣
Spneb’s name is a difficult one to pronounce, it is a fusion of the two types of medication she was on during some intense treatment back in 2007 when she developed a fungal disease called Aspergillosis (her name consists of a drug ‘Sp’ and a nebuliser ‘neb’) . It took 4 months to treat, but apart from some minor scaring to her lungs she recovered well.
She came to Paradise Park back in 1988 from Birdworld Farnham.

PENGUIN CHICKS
We are also delighted to announce we have several penguin pairs on nests at the moment with one chick just hatched and hopefully more on the way.
